About a month ago there was a fire that spread rapidly through the Mathari slum in Nairobi , Kenya. Over 200 very poor people were left homeless with only the clothes on their backs. The fire didn’t even make the Nairobi papers- who cares, right? Well, God cares.
Someone called Sabina (director of Women’s ministry for BWM) on her cell; telling her what had happened. Sabina hurried down to Mathari with loaves of bread and some clothing she had hastily collected. The distraught fire victims were thankful but left in desperate straits.
Sabina emailed me pleading for funds for mattresses and blankets. I sent the money immediately. In a few short days, she had rented a community hall to distribute the beds and blankets. Before doing so, Sabina shared the love of Christ with the large crowd, leading many in a prayer to receive Christ as Lord and Savior. Afterward she began to receive calls to return and share some more with them, which she has done the past three Sundays. Sabina was the only person in the room that owned a Bible. She again called me, asking for funds to buy them Bibles. What would you do? You got it, we bought them Bibles that were given out yesterday. What a happy group that was!
Now for the rest of the story…
Word had spread that Sabina was teaching every Sunday in the Mathari slum. Yesterday, 8 young men, former gang members from the nearby Huruma slum showed up, wanting to be taught God’s Word. You see one good deed begets another better deed. We are to cast our bread upon the waters, and wait to see what the Father washes back our way on the tides of His Grace.
Til next time,
Barry
