I know you are thinking about Syria; if not, you should be! During the last few days it seems all roads lead to Damascus. What a tangled mess that place is. One US Senator remarked about the Syrian civil war, “It is hard to find the “white hat” guys in all of this.” Many of my friends are asking me, “whose side should we (USA) be on?” I have no simple answer to that complex question, but I do have an opinion on it.
First, one could take the position – “Who appointed the USA to be the world’s hall monitor to stop all the worlds fights? Just because we CAN does not mean we should. Picking another fight on another Middle Eastern front does not seem the wisest thing to do when we already have failed to win a couple of others. However, seeing the hundreds of men, women and precious children gassed to death is enough to stir the righteous anger of anyone with a moral pulse. The age old truth arises, “All that is needed for the success of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Scripture says it this way, “He that knows how to do good, and refuses to do it , has committed sin.”
Secondly, there is not a friend we have in Damascus or any where else in Syria. They ALL hate us. Some moderate Muslims may want Assad out, but even they do not want us in! See what happened in Libya and Egypt; we gave them guns and now the bad guys on all sides are still at it. One of the moral rules of war is to fight a fight that you can win something worth dying for. Many of us do not see that possibility in Syria.
Thirdly, after the first American bomb explodes on Syrian soil, the USA will get blamed for every evil done there. We become the common enemy. Radical Muslim hatred for America will unleash a torrent of hatred toward Christian churches in Syria and then on Israel for being our ally and friend. My personal greatest fear is that US involvement in this tribal “family feud’” will be an invitation for other hostile nations in the region to come to Assad’s aid, or even to the aid of rebel factions who wish to spit out their anti-american venomous poison.
My true prayer is for the peace of Jerusalem. It is a prayer for us to find more ways to love Muslims, win them to our Savior, and build bridges of trust between us, before we start shooting missiles at them. However, it is probably much too late for that! Regretfully we are not marching to Zion that beautiful city of God, but rather we are marching to Damascus on the way to Armageddon, the end of life as we have known it.
Don’t you just love my reality show??
