I am thinking about leaders. Mostly about those who disappoint us repeatedly. If you are alert or even slightly aware- the world of man is in a leadership crisis. An example of this crisis is last Sunday. I was teaching from the book of Nehemiah at my church, and I asked the class to give me a one word description of Washington politicians. Without a moments reflection came the shouts, “Greedy, corrupt, selfish, evil, liars!” It was shocking. Not one person gave a positive retort. None!
Such is the leadership vortex we are caught in. From top to bottom, leaders have diminished in integrity, character, and even basic goodness. The spirit of Honest Abe, Churchill, Mandela, Reagan or Martin Luther King is lost to us. Will it ever return is our fear.
It seems not a week goes by that another leader falls or fails. Some would say it is no worse today than in days gone by. They say it is just that the media is more aware and the Internet exposes everything. They are right in this regard- there is no place to hide if you are a public figure. The emperor has no clothes. I wish that were the simple truth of it. You know what I mean- we are all flawed, cracked mirrors, and sinners for real. However, what we are collectively is a reflection of who we are individually.
Nations are made up of millions of individuals and the leaven in the lump will raise up and lead that nation. Our sons and daughters of today are the politicians, statesmen, and corporate leaders of tomorrow. THAT frightens me! Why? Because they were mentored by our generation. What they see is who they become. God help us!
Leaders are not perfect, they never have been. I read the Bible a lot and its heroes are real people with real warts. They are not the saints, but some have made them out to be.
Adam, the first of us, was weak and failed us all.
Moses was flawed, he saw not the Promised Land.
King David was a womanizer and broke God’s heart.
Samson had his Delilah, and Peter his denials.
This tells me that all leaders are human and will fail at something, some way, some time.
However, that is not what is going on here. This nation is in crisis because God cannot find men and women he can trust to live out the truth and values Christ died for. Far too many of our leaders lack the character and courage to stand tall defending the unborn, or the sanctity of marriage, and multiple other fundamental Judeo-Christian values that made this a great nation.
There is an old Hebrew proverb that says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” A modern translation of that phrase reads, “Where there is ignorance of God, the people run wild!” I like that better. It best describes the evening news you and I will watch tonight at 6PM. The people are running wild because there is a major lacking of Godly leaders to set them marching to Zion. We have our Pied Pipers but we like mice are being led to the river to drown!
I am praying for a modern day Moses to lead us out of this downward spiral. You better join me in that prayer, because the ultimate bad guy is coming. The stage is set. The spirit of Antichrist is among us and is smelling up the place. The worst leader of darkness is coming dressed as a Savior, and millions will rise up and call him “blessed.” I’m sick just thinking about it…
