How many Bibles do you own; more than one is my guess? Take a moment to thank God for that blessing. Over 90% professing Christians in Africa do not own a Bible. They are fortunate if the man they call pastor has one. Really- it’s true.
In May, I am launching out on a new venture that I want you to pray with me about. I am returning to East Africa to begin formalized training of these pastors.
Some background will help you understand the magnitude of this project:
Eleven years ago BWM began planting churches in East Africa, There are now more than 500 of these Churches in six countries. Most of them have a pastor that our staff has mentored. These men are literally “in the bush.” Most do not have a church building, but meet under a tree, in a school, or under a thatched-roof pavilion.
These pastors are faithful men working in extremely difficult situations. They have very limited Bible training, and no tools for ministry. About 80% of them have a Bible in a language they can read! Isn’t that astonishing?
So, this May I will begin our training by assuring that each of our pastors has a Study Bible. Not just any Study Bible, but a new ESV Global Study Bible. It is a wonderful tool for a pastor to have. We begin in Kenya and Uganda, meeting with the first 100 of our men. They are very excited. I have personally met only a few of them. They are my 3rd generation disciples. Some are fourth generation! God be praised.
I’ll tell you more about this venture in the days ahead.
